Davis, Mirotic help Pelicans rip Rockets

HOUSTON (AP) Anthony Davis had 32 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists while Nikola Mirotic scored 30 points to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 131-112 win over the Houston Rockets in their season opener on Wednesday night.

Davis added three blocks and three steals, while Mirotic shot a sizzling 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and Julius Randle had 25 points off the bench.

Eric Gordon led the Rockets with 21 points off the bench, while P.J. Tucker and Chris Paul both added 19 points. James Harden had 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

Leonard has 24 in debut to lead Raptors

TORONTO (AP) Kawhi Leonard had 24 points and a team-high 13 rebounds in his Toronto debut, Kyle Lowry scored 27 points and the Raptors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 116-104 on Wednesday night in the season-opener for both teams.

Fred VanVleet scored 14 points, Pascal Siakam had 13 and Danny Green 11 as the Raptors won their sixth straight season opener and gave Nick Nurse a victory in his first game as head coach.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana Pacers coach Nate McMillan kept asking his team to focus on defense and rebounding during the offseason.

Antetokounmpo has 25, Bucks edge Hornets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 25 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, and the Milwaukee Bucks spoiled the Charlotte Hornets' celebration of 30 years of basketball with a 113-112 victory in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Antetokounmpo made two free throws with 23.7 seconds remaining to put the Bucks ahead after the Hornets battled back from a 20-point deficit behind 41 points from Kemba Walker.

Bamba, Gordon lead Magic over Heat

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Rookie Mohamed Bamba dunked twice and blocked a shot during Orlando's 9-0 run in the fourth quarter and the Magic held on for a 104-101 win over the Miami Heat in the NBA season opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Aaron Gordon had 26 points and 16 rebounds for the Magic, who went without a field goal over the final 4 1/2 minutes.

Drummond has 24 and 20, Pistons top Nets

DETROIT (AP) Andre Drummond had 24 points and 20 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons won their opener under new coach Dwane Casey, 103-100 over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night.

Blake Griffin added 26 points for the Pistons, who were without two potential starters but still managed to hold off Brooklyn. Caris LeVert equaled a career high with 27 points for the Nets, and he drove to the basket in the final seconds with Brooklyn down one. LeVert lost the ball, and it went out of bounds to Detroit.

Knicks score 49 in 2nd, overwhelm Hawks

NEW YORK (AP) Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 31 points, sparking the Knicks during their franchise-record, 49-point second quarter, and New York beat the Atlanta Hawks 126-107 on Wednesday night in their first game under coach David Fizdale.

Hardaway had 16 points in the period, when the Knicks matched the Hawks' point total for the entire first half. New York led 72-49 at the break.

Suns sign Jamal Crawford to 1-year deal

PHOENIX (AP) The Phoenix Suns have officially announced the signing of veteran guard Jamal Crawford.

Wednesday's announcement ahead of the team's season opener against Dallas came two days after there were multiple reports that Crawford and the Suns had agreed to a one-year deal.
