Cubs closer Morrow on DL with tight back

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs will have to get by without closer Brandon Morrow for at least a little while.

The Cubs placed the right-hander on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, leaving a short-handed bullpen without its most important piece.

While Morrow went on the DL, Yu Darvish threw a simulated game. Manager Joe Maddon said he looked "outstanding," and the Cubs will see how he feels Thursday before announcing the next step as he works his way back from tendinitis in his right triceps.

Tigers-Royals in Omaha before 2019 CWS

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals will play a regular-season game in Omaha the week the 2019 College World Series opens, The Associated Press has learned.

Major League Baseball and the NCAA have been working to arrange a game as a kickoff event to the CWS, two people close to the situation told the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details.

Giants closer breaks hand punching door

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Giants closer Hunter Strickland broke his pitching hand punching a door in frustration after blowing the save and taking the loss in a 5-4 defeat to the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

The right-hander had surgery Tuesday and expected to be out six to eight weeks, manager Bruce Bochy said. An X-ray after the game revealed the break of Strickland's pinkie, similar to what sidelined lefty ace Madison Bumgarner to begin the season after he was hurt in his final spring training start.

Trout stays hot, Angels hold off D-backs

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) There is never a June gloom for Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout.

Trout drove in two runs, Kole Calhoun and Ian Kinsler added solo homers and the Angels held on for a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

DENVER (AP) A show of power helped take the edge off the Colorado Rockies' recent pitching problems.

Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and Ian Desmond homered in succession during a six-run third inning, German Marquez pitched effectively for six innings and Colorado snapped an eight-game home losing streak by beating the New York Mets 10-8 on Tuesday night.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Buster Posey certainly thought he got hit by a pitch in retaliation.

Manager Bruce Bochy is still disappointed the Marlins plunked Evan Longoria last week and the third baseman is now recovering from surgery on his left hand.

Carpenter's HR lifts Cards over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Matt Carpenter had a hunch a fastball was coming. When the pitch arrived, he delivered.

Carpenter hit a tiebreaking solo homer with two out in the ninth, helping the St. Louis Cardinals edge the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 on Tuesday night.
