(TSX / STATS) -- Linebacker Alec Ogletree reached agreement with the Los Angeles Rams on a four-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the contract is worth $42 million with $30 million guaranteed.

Ogletree, a first-round draft pick in 2013, would have become an unrestricted free agent after this season if he had not agreed to an extension. His new deal runs through the 2021 season.

"Alec has evolved into a true leader of our football team and we are excited to sign him to this extension," Rams general manager Les Snead said. "His teammates voted him as a captain in back-to-back seasons for a reason -- and it's not only because of his production, but his character and resiliency. We look forward to Alec helping our team emerge as a consistent winner for years to come."

This is Ogletree's fifth season with the Rams, and he leads the team this season with 54 total tackles, including 30 solo stops, and also has two sacks.

Since 2014, no inside linebacker has recorded more "splash plays" (which include batted passes, passes defensed, forced fumbles or interceptions) than Ogletree, who has 28.
